Shared world, different experience
Netflix describes the original anime as a game-inspired story with a new protagonist. It follows a fixed story across its episodes. The game is another way to encounter the setting; the anime is not a recording of a playthrough.
For a newcomer, the distinction answers the practical question of where to start. Choose the anime if you want to watch David’s story. Choose the game if you want to experience an interactive work in the same universe. Neither this page nor the show’s standalone description requires buying the game before watching.

What the original Edgerunners Update establishes
CD PROJEKT RED’s patch 1.6 notes explicitly list anime-related secrets in Night City, new equipment and Photo Mode features. This is a documented connection between the works, separate from similarities a viewer might notice in a scene.
Those notes describe a historical update. They are not a statement that 1.6 is the current version, and they are not a complete route to every related item. A current gameplay walkthrough would need to account for the player’s platform and installed version.
Choose what you want to do next
If you came here from the anime, decide whether you want another story to watch, more of a specific character, or a game to explore. These lead to different works, so there is little benefit in treating every related release as one compulsory checklist.
| You want… | A useful next stop |
|---|---|
| Another standalone anime story | Edgerunners 2, with its new cast. |
| More about Rebecca and Pilar | The MADNESS manga prequel. |
| An interactive visit to the setting | The official Cyberpunk 2077 game page. |
About timelines and spoilers
This introduction does not assign a precise in-universe date to every work or reveal how David’s story ends. The distinction you need for a first visit is that the original anime has its own narrative and the related works have their own entry points.
The original episode index lists titles without plot recaps. Use it to follow the story in order before reading character-fate discussions or detailed game easter-egg guides.
Sources & editorial note
The connection is based on Netflix’s original coverage and CD PROJEKT RED’s official patch notes. Game tie-ins are documented, not personally playtested. This is not a current-version equipment or build guide.
