Rebecca and Pilar before the anime
KADOKAWA’s publishing announcement identifies Rebecca and Pilar as the protagonists and places the story before their meeting with David and the others. The prequel therefore adds earlier material around two familiar characters; it does not retell the original ten episodes as a required companion text.
The useful distinction is medium and focus. MADNESS is something to read about the siblings. Edgerunners 2 is another animated series with a new cast. Similar branding does not make the two interchangeable.
Creators and editions
The publisher names Bartosz Sztybor as writer, Asano as artist and CD PROJEKT RED as supervisor. KADOKAWA’s July 2025 announcement separates the Japanese print edition from international editions and names Dark Horse Comics for English.
When finding a copy, match the title, volume number and language. A Japanese publication date is not automatically the release date for an English paperback, and bonuses described for a particular edition should not be assumed to appear in every translation.
| Detail | What to check |
|---|---|
| Title | Cyberpunk: Edgerunners MADNESS |
| Volume | Look for the volume number on the listing. |
| Language | Check the edition, not just the storefront language. |
| English publisher | Dark Horse Comics |
| Bonuses | Confirm the contents of that specific edition. |
Where to look for the manga
Use the publisher’s product listing for the English edition and its current format or stock information. Libraries and booksellers can also search by the complete title and publisher. A separate chapter release and a collected volume are different products; check which one a listing actually offers.

When to read it
For someone new to the setting, we suggest watching the original anime first, then reading MADNESS if Rebecca and Pilar interest you. This is editorial advice: a prequel’s earlier fictional chronology does not make it a prerequisite.
If you have already finished David’s story, the manga gives you a focused next reading choice. If you would rather watch a new ensemble, the Edgerunners 2 guide is the more relevant next stop.
